Each year 23 August is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, on that day tributes are paid by people across the world to the tireless struggle of slaves for their freedom.
The date was chosen by UNESCO as it marks the anniversary of the uprising that took place on the island of Santo Domingo; known today as Haiti and the Dominican Republic; during the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, the events of that night shook the slave system, radically and irreversibly and have been credited with providing the impetus for the process which would lead to the abolition of slavery.
